On 7th March, a meaningful step was taken towards empowering rural entrepreneurship in Kerala as Gramodhaya, India’s first dedicated e-commerce marketplace for rural entrepreneurs – conducted its first Vendor Onboarding Program at the District Panchayat Headquarters, opposite Civil Station, Kakkanad, Ernakulam.
The event witnessed over 100 rural entrepreneurs from different parts of the district coming together with a shared aspiration, to take their businesses beyond local markets and reach customers across India through digital commerce.
A Platform Built for Rural Entrepreneurs
India’s villages are home to countless skilled artisans, farmers, food processors, and micro-entrepreneurs. Yet many of them struggle to grow their businesses due to limited market access, lack of marketing channels, and dependence on middlemen. Gramodhaya was created to bridge this gap. As a first-of-its-kind rural e-commerce marketplace in India, Gramodhaya is designed specifically to help rural enterprises showcase and sell their products nationwide while receiving the support needed to thrive in the digital economy.
Through the platform, rural entrepreneurs gain access to:
- A dedicated online marketplace for rural products
- Simple vendor onboarding and digital support
- Logistics and shipping guidance
- Better visibility and branding opportunities
- Direct access to larger markets and buyers
The vision of Gramodhaya is simple yet powerful: Empowering Villages. Enriching the Nation.
The program was officially inaugurated by Ms. Swapna P, Manager at the District Industries Centre (DIC), Ernakulam, a Government of Kerala initiative supporting MSMEs. In her address, she highlighted the persistent challenges rural entrepreneurs face in finding buyers and expanding their market reach. Despite producing high-quality products, many small businesses struggle due to the lack of structured marketing platforms and outreach programs. She appreciated the Gramodhaya initiative and emphasised that platforms like this can significantly strengthen MSMEs by helping them connect with wider markets.
Dr. Aswathy S. Nair, Agricultural Officer, spoke about the resilience of rural entrepreneurs, particularly those engaged in agriculture-based products and value-added food items. She pointed out that rural entrepreneurs often face multiple challenges including limited market exposure, lack of branding support, and price pressures from intermediaries. Initiatives like Gramodhaya, she said, can help entrepreneurs connect directly with customers and unlock new opportunities for growth.
Mrs. Vahida TH, Managing Director of Corrazone, highlighted the importance of building a strong startup ecosystem that nurtures grassroots entrepreneurship. She noted that many rural innovators create unique products rooted in local culture and tradition, and with the right digital platforms and mentorship, these entrepreneurs can successfully scale their ventures.
Learning to Scale Through Online Platforms
A key highlight of the event was an engaging session conducted by Dojo Jose, Founder & CEO of Gramodhaya.in, on “Scaling Businesses Through Online Platforms.” The session introduced rural entrepreneurs to the possibilities of digital commerce and demonstrated how even small village enterprises can expand their reach through structured online marketplaces. Participants were also given a detailed introduction to the Gramodhaya platform, its mission, and the comprehensive support system available for vendors.
The response from the participants was extremely encouraging. With the support of friendly onboarding consultants, entrepreneurs were guided through the complete onboarding process including vendor registration and documentation. Over 55 rural vendors successfully completed their FREE onboarding during the first vendor onboarding event, marking a strong beginning for the initiative.
Adding a cultural touch to the event, the audience also enjoyed live folk song performances, bringing energy and warmth to the gathering.
Reflecting on the success of the program, Dojo Jose, Founder & CEO of Gramodhaya, shared: “The response from rural entrepreneurs has been truly inspiring. Seeing more than half of the attendees complete their onboarding during the very first program shows how strongly rural entrepreneurs are ready to embrace digital opportunities. Gramodhaya is committed to supporting them in reaching wider markets and scaling their businesses.”
The Road Ahead
Following the successful launch, Gramodhaya will be expanding its vendor onboarding programs to more Panchayats and villages, enabling rural entrepreneurs across regions to join the platform.
By the end of April, Gramodhaya aims to onboard over 750 rural vendors free of cost, with plans to scale the initiative further in the coming months. This is only the beginning of a larger mission, to bring India’s village entrepreneurs into the mainstream digital economy and strengthen rural livelihoods across the nation.
