Excerpts from the interview by Small Enterprise India with Prashant Pillai highlight the inspiring journey of Sampige’s Natural Products.
Q. Sampige’s products beautifully combine tradition with sustainability. Could you share the inspiration behind starting this journey and how it aligns with your personal values?
The inspiration behind Sampige Foods stems from my love for India’s rich food heritage and a deep-rooted belief in sustainable living. Growing up in a household where natural and traditional methods were cherished, I realized the value of creating products that honor those practices while preserving the environment. My corporate journey taught me the importance of innovation and scalability, which I now bring to Sampige. This venture is more than a business; it’s a reflection of my personal commitment to fostering health, sustainability, and respect for our planet. By combining tradition with eco-conscious practices, Sampige Foods stands as a testament to the idea that progress and preservation can go hand in hand.
Q. Your business emphasizes eco-friendly and chemical-free products. How do you ensure the authenticity of your ingredients and the sustainability of your production process?
At Sampige, we leave no stone unturned when it comes to ensuring authenticity and sustainability. We source our ingredients directly from farmers and farmer-producer organizations (FPOs) that adhere to natural and organic practices. Each batch undergoes rigorous audits and quality checks to maintain consistency and purity. Our production process reflects our commitment to eco-friendliness by utilizing natural pest control methods, minimizing energy consumption, and employing sustainable techniques. Packaging is another area we focus on; we use recyclable materials to reduce waste. By integrating these practices, we create products that are not only authentic and chemical-free but also contribute to a healthier planet.
Q. Rural empowerment is a significant part of Sampige’s mission. Can you tell us how your venture has impacted local communities, especially in terms of job creation and skill development?
Empowering rural communities is at the core of Sampige’s vision. Our venture has created stable employment for farmers, artisans, and workers involved in sourcing, production, and packaging. Beyond jobs, we focus on skill development by introducing modern techniques while respecting traditional practices. One of our most impactful innovations has been teaching rural workers to create paper from agricultural waste, turning discarded materials into an income source. This initiative not only reduces waste but also instills a sense of pride and environmental consciousness among the workers. By empowering women and young people, we’re creating sustainable livelihoods and fostering economic independence, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we work with.
Q. As a rural entrepreneur, what have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced in scaling Sampige’s Natural Products, and how have you overcome them?
Scaling Sampige has been a journey of resilience and adaptability. Limited infrastructure, logistical hurdles, and bridging the gap between traditional practices and modern market expectations were some of our primary challenges. Educating consumers about the premium value of our rural products without compromising affordability was another. We tackled these obstacles by leveraging technology to streamline production, forming partnerships with reliable logistics providers, and using digital marketing to amplify our reach. Strategic collaborations have also played a vital role in overcoming resource constraints. These measures, combined with unwavering dedication, have enabled Sampige to grow while staying true to our roots.
Q. Looking ahead, what are your future plans for Sampige? Do you envision expanding your product line or exploring new markets while staying true to your core values?
The future of Sampige is bright and ambitious. We aim to expand our product line with innovative offerings like bio-leather and specialty salts such as Salicorina, catering to eco-conscious consumers. Our vision includes entering international markets through strategic partnerships, bringing the essence of Sampige to a global audience. While scaling up, we will remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and rural empowerment. Every step of our journey will uphold our values, ensuring that our growth benefits not only our consumers but also the communities and environment we are deeply connected with.
