In what can be termed as a path breaking product combining the usability of a tablet and a laptop, Microsoft has released its new flagship device known as the Surface Pro 3. Succeeding the earlier version known as the Surface Pro 2, Surface Pro 3 essentially offers performance of a high end laptop built in a think and compact device that can give any tablet a run for its money. The Surface Pro 3 is powered by an Intel Core i processor making it the slimmest device in the technology world build using a core i processor. Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with its 9.1 mm frame comes with a 12" screen supporting stylus and an adjustable kickstand.
Microsoft Surface pro 3 comes with a 12 inch ClearType Full HD display offering a resolution of 2160*1449 with multipoint touch and an aspect ratio of 3:2. Built with magnesium cashing on the outside the Surface Pro 3 weights 1.76 pounds. The physical dimensions of the Surface Pro 3 are 7.93 in x 11.5 in x 0.36 in.
The device works on the latest Windows 8.1 Pro operating system. Surface Pro 3 is built on a 4th-generation Intel Core i5-4300U (1.6 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost up to 2.90 GHz) and 4th-generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4400 CPU with two variants offering 4 GB or 8 GB of dual channel LPDDR3 RAM. The device has a decent battery life offering up to nine hours of Web-browsing battery life. Microsoft Surface pro 3 comes equipped with 5MP and 1080p HD front and rear facing cameras along with the regular sensors and ports.
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has a big screen compared to any other flagship handheld device in its class. Compared to the popular i-pad which has a screen size of 9.7 inches, Surface Pro 3 with its 12 inch screen size may take some time for the user to get used to. The surface Pro 3 comes with a pen stylus that works and feels like a real pen offering handwriting and doodling experience just like scribing on a real notepad.
One of the unique design features of the Surface pro 3 is the introduction of series of fins placed in the ear side allowing swifter cooling mechanism compared to the traditional exhaust option used in virtually all handheld devices. Currently Surface Pro 3 is available for sale only in the US and Canadian markets but Microsoft hopes to extend the launch to 26 more countries by the end of August 2014. Unfortunately it may still take a while for Microsoft Surface Pro 3 to reach Indian shores.
Performance and Usability:
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 works well both as a laptop and a tablet although it does have some small flaws. The Pro 3 runs on a full version of Microsoft Windows 8.1 which is the same that one may get on a standalone laptop or desktop. This means the Surface pro 3 is well equipped to deliver a power packed performance and can virtually operate any program that a standalone high end laptop can handle. The Surface Pro 3 has been intelligently designed to work as either a laptop or a tablet especially when one is watching a video or reading an e-book.
