Mr. Jayaraj, CEO of Vintech Air Control Engineers and Consultants based at Virugambakkam, Chennai shares his success story to Small Enterprise India.

A totally self made man, Jayaraj exudes quiet confidence and poise. As a student, he was very promising, and he passed out of REC Calicut with flying colours, majoring in electrical engineering. Stark reality struck the young aspiring professional, that there was a dearth of job opportunities in Kerala, due to stagnation of industrial growth in the State.

He decided to explore the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu and came to Chennai in the year 1973, with just Rs. 225 in possession. A few relatives settled in Chennai helped him to tide over the rough period, by allowing him to reside with them. Each day, he used to walk from KK Nagar  to Gemini, spanning ten kilometers, in search of a job. His persistence paid off finally and his first job was with ACARE, Air conditioning corporation, Ltd. Salary offered was Rs 500. He was designated as engineer in charge of a multi crore project undertaken by ACARE on behalf of Madras Atomic Power, Kalpakkam.

He stayed on the job, working hard at the project. His efficiency and commitment bagged him four more fresh assignments at the same Atomic power project. He took this up as a challenge and was at Kalpakkam for ten years. All his spare time was devoted to avid reading at the power project library. He was amply rewarded for his hard work and he was given double increments.

In the year 1980, he got married and he was forced to shift to the city. He had to commute daily to Kalpakkam and back covering around 80 km each day.. It started taking its toll on his health, and he resigned, to join Duvent fans in Egmore, which was into manufacturing ventilation machines .

For 2 years, he was in absolute control of managing the firm . He was successful in achieving 100% turn over for the company. Spurred by this success, Jayaraj and four other friends joined hands and formed a company on the same lines. It was a total failure due to miscommunication between partners.

Out of a job and in dire straits, Jayaraj even had to pledge his wife’s jewellery to run the family. He and his friend used to sit for hours on end each day in Panagal Park, T nagar, brainstorming for ideas. He had sudden windfall, when a known contact from Bangalore, offered him a contract to supply ventilation machines and advanced him a cheque for Rs 0ne lakh.

The year 1984 saw a very embittered Jayaraj, and he decided to strike out on his own, which was truly a blessing in disguise. And a turning point in his life. He adopted the mantra of quality, precision, service and consistency, and in the year 1992, Vintech Air control Engineers was conceptualised and formed with a capital of Rs 40000. Jayaraj and his brother in-law, Hareendran teamed up together and initially Vintech was into consultancy alone, as their mainstay. Later, they realised that there was very little profitability in just restricting themselves to consultancy. They then ventured into manufacturing blowers and other equipment to control air pollution.  Manufacturing was initially done on an outsourcing basis, but Jayaraj being an astute business man, realised the value of having his own unit to manufacture air pollution control equipment. He rented some land at Ekatttuthangal and constructed a building on the same.

They continued with moderate and consistent success for five to six years .  But later on, due to pressure from their land lord, they decided to shift to Porur, Mouliwakkam, where they procured for themselves 10 cents of land and constructed a unit spanning 3000 square feet.

There was no looking back for Jayaraj after this. In 2002, they opened a new unit at Gurugambakkam industrial estate in 12 cents of land, with 25 workers. For this, they had procured loan from Bank of Baroda for 20 lakhs.

Vintech Air Ccontrol Engineers and Consultants is now a registered SSI unit, in the field of air pollution control equipments and systems, industrial blowers and fans.

In the year 2005, Jayaraj opened yet another unit at Virugambakkam , Chennai. “Every year, we set an objective. Technology may be advanced in Europe, but IQ is best in India, “opines Jayaraj.” Due to recession, people are reluctant to go in for development, but our products are statutory equipments”.

Vintech has now an impressive clientele from all sectors spanning Tamil Nadu, Kerala,  Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Having come up the hard way, Jayaraj is very particular about providing all support and personal attention to his staff.

Into his late 50’s, Jayaraj is a virtual go- getter. With ideas and potential galore. He has huge expansion plans in mind. Ever young at heart, and a fast learner, he recently completed his MBA in marketing. He believes in the power of knowledge, and is very particular about keeping himself; constantly updated on all fronts.

Calm, cool and collected, Jayaraj sports a very charming smile at all times, which speaks volumes for his attitude towards life- a very positive one.
