Social Innovations needed to solve the problems of the poor: Sam Pitroda

India is in a unique position to solve the problems of the poor as it has the largest number of poor and huge amount of talent to address challenges faced by them, said Sam Pitroda, advisor to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on public information infrastructure and innovations and Honorary Chairman of Action For India.

“There is a lot of talent solving the problem of the rich. Innovations are needed to solve the problem of the poor,” Pitroda added addressing a meet of 100 young social innovators at the first ever ‘Action For India’ Forum 2012 focussing on how technology can make social enterprises scale their operations more effectively.

MSME grievances to be addressed as high priority in West Bengal

The West Bengal government will set up a high level committee to hear and address grievances of the micro, small and medium enterprises sector as part of its strategy to boost industrial growth in the state, the West Bengal commerce and industry minister Partha Chatterjee said here today.

The minister was speaking at the 4th India MSME Summit organised by the Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME), New Delhi in collaboration with the Federation of Small and Medium Industries(FOSMI), West Bengal.

Trend Study by Synchroniser highlighting Future ICT Priorities

A Panel Discussion titled "Future ICT Priorities for India" was organized recently. The outcome of this high powered panel discussion on future ICT priorities of India is incorporated in the report titled "Trend study on India's R&D Focus in the ICT Domain in the next ten years". This report will be submitted to the Dept of IT, Government of India and the European Commission providing an actionable roadmap for policy coordination and alignment to promote joint ICT research and innovation.

Water Shortage Affecting Businesses, Badly

In a survey by industry lobby Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), member industries said over the past few years, access to water had become difficult and the problem was likely to increase in the coming years.

After power shortage, water scarcity will be the next growth barrier in India. Inadequate availability of water is becoming an area of concern for industries, especially for thermal power, chemicals, textiles and cement plants, and would affect their businesses massively in coming years, says a survey.

Sixty per cent of the respondents said non-availability of required water was impacting their business today. This is expected to rise to 87 per cent after 10 years.

Delay in Retail FDI is disappointing: Assocham

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) highlighted that delaying the FDI in retail is like a wasting an opportunity and it will dent the country’s image as a global investment destination and put further pressure on the falling rupee.

Terming the government's decision to put on hold the new FDI policy highly disappointing, various industry leaders said that it is a step backward at a time when India needs influx of capital in the retail sector the most.
